In-Store product display – How to succeed

To succeed with in-store product display, a well-thought-out strategy is required. Where do you want customers to focus their attention, and in what order? Your store interior can help you both showcase your products in an appealing way and guide customers through the store.

The expression “if you’re not seen, you don’t exist” is especially true when it comes to in-store product display. How products are presented is crucial for attracting customers to purchase and requires strategy and knowledge of basic principles.

And above all, a good understanding of psychology. Let’s explore some smart techniques that lead to successful product display, and look at how you can interact with customers to create the best possible in-store experience.

8 Tips for In-Store Product Display

1. Select Your Products Carefully

Too many products in one display can create a cluttered impression. Choose a smaller selection of products for your campaign and focus on showcasing them in an attractive way.

2. Group Products

Odd numbers of products in a group are often more visually appealing than even numbers. They make the display more dynamic and interesting. Think three, five, or seven products to achieve good balance.

3. Create Height Variation

Vary the height in your display and create different levels using shelves, tables, or podiums. This offers opportunities to present multiple products clearly or make key products stand out and attract attention.

4. Work with Contrasts

Displays can easily become monotonous if everything looks the same. By combining different materials and shapes, you create contrast and variation that attract customers’ attention. For example, mix soft and hard materials, glossy and matte surfaces, or rough and smooth textures.

5. Think Storytelling

Create an atmosphere and a story around your products by using decorations and props, or even music and scent that complement the products.

6. Influence with Color

Colors can influence emotions and behaviors. By using color consciously and strategically, you can enhance your in-store display. Color can highlight a product and make it stand out.

7. Think Outside the Box

Who says clothes have to lie on a table? Hang a coordinated outfit on the wall! Dare to be different and use all your creative talents. You can create a lot with imagination, tools, and a bit of paint.

8. Don’t Forget Lighting

Last but not least: highlight product features with the right lighting and create an inviting atmosphere.

We Are Influenced by Color

Color has a strong impact on our mood and can create different emotional responses. Understanding the psychological effect of how color influences customer behavior and purchasing decisions can be extremely helpful in in-store display. Warm colors such as red, orange, and yellow are associated with energy, passion, and warmth. They evoke feelings of excitement and intensity, which is why red is often used for sales and promotions. Cool colors such as blue, green, and purple, on the other hand, are considered calming and are often associated with relaxation and tranquility. By understanding your target audience’s preferences and psychology, you can use color strategically in your displays. For example, pastel colors may attract a younger audience, while muted tones may appeal more to an older demographic.

Decorate with Light

Lighting is a key element when it comes to in-store product display. When we want to highlight a product or a specific area, we often add accent lighting. With spotlights or directed beams, details can be emphasized and excitement created through shadows and contrasts from different light angles. In the jewelry brand Maria Nilsdotter’s flagship store, we at Norco created the feeling of stepping into an enchanted world. The interior was designed to tell stories – just like the jewelry. Through carefully planned accent lighting and a focus on details and contrasts, we created a store interior that matched the brand. It became not just a store, but a destination.

Environmentally Conscious Display

By incorporating sustainability thinking and choosing recyclable materials, you help reduce environmental impact while making responsible choices. When Nudie Jeans – the well-known Gothenburg-based brand – opened a new store in Stockholm, we at Norco developed a new interior concept characterized by sustainability. The store was created not only to sell jeans but to communicate the brand’s values and environmental commitment. Materials were carefully selected to align with Nudie’s sustainability concept. The result: a strong vintage feel using materials such as copper, spruce, and tin. The floor was made entirely of denim fabric – a clear expression of their desire to reuse materials and create a unique, environmentally friendly store environment.

Interactive In-Store Display

In recent years, we have seen a shift from static signage to digital screens. The major advantage of digital displays is the ability to deliver more than just static information. Instead, they can show moving images, animations, and even interactive tools that allow customers to explore products. For example, customers can view different colors or variations and get information about product availability – something that was previously impossible. With QR codes strategically placed within the display, customers can quickly access more information directly on their phones. They can retrieve product descriptions or read reviews from other customers who have rated the product.

Creating an attractive in-store display is not just about getting customers to stop and look – it’s about convincing them to buy. With a clear strategy, creativity, and knowledge of the fundamental principles of display, there is great potential to capture customer attention. By telling a story and leveraging design elements such as color, light, and textures, you can create an inspiring environment where customers feel engaged. A well-thought-out product display can be the decisive factor in driving purchases.
