SALK is best known to many as the tennis hall where Björn Borg trained as a child. And now they have turned 100 years old. In connection with this, a major renovation of the reception, shop, gym, ping pong, youth and club rooms as well as the kitchen and a major remodeling of the entrance has been carried out. The new premises must reflect SALK’s history and at the same time meet the needs of the modern city dweller. The goal is to create a facility that stands out while being like a second home for all its members. Tengbom Arkitekter has designed and we have been responsible for construction project management, interior design and construction.

The entrance

To begin with, the entire the entrance has been expanded and made the tennis hall, restaurant and gym more easily accessible. Newly laid limestone floor combined with light walls and a new oak staircase gives a welcome impression. Together with SALK’s logo against a background of white tennis net and leather-wrapped railing, you are led up to the new hall. Here, material and color choices radiate warmth, timelessness and naturalness in combination with a good finish. Wood, leather, limestone, brass, textiles and tactile materials are contrasted against clean bright surfaces combined with historical profile pictures, trophies and wins on walls testify to the club’s history.

Reception and shop

A speed bump in the old tennis hall was the reception. The goal was that the tennis hall would give a more hospitable impression and, above all, it would be more easily accessible. This meant that a narrow passage, appointment in a glass-enclosed cure and the interior had to be replaced. The idea was to combine café, reception and shop right in the heart of the sports hall. The existing one was torn out and replaced by an open and accessible counter with plenty of surface where all functions could properly take up space.

Club room & Kitchen

The new club room with new glass partitions in solid oak and newly laid mosaic parquet floor gives a fresh impression. Along with practical folding walls a new kitchen in a rustic country style, there is now a built-in flexibility in the room. Perfect for both annual, member and board meetings but also for conferences. Span and wall sections in glass and oak provide a nice setting for the tennis courts, both from the stands, the clubrooms and the kitchen. With a focus on comfort, the club rooms are furnished in a classic style, with matching furniture. A built-in wall section for winning trophies together with drapes in dark velvet provides both warmth and a clear atmosphere. Leather-covered armchairs with carpets in soft tones make this a historic meeting place. In the kitchen, which is often used in connection with meetings, people can now meet over a piece of food and in some cases also cook. It has been given a dull gray tone in combination with generous preparation surfaces in granite. And now there is even a bar.

Gym / Youth room

In combination with the complete renovation of the tennis hall, a new well-equipped gym with a view of Alvik square. In connection with this, a table tennis room was also built adjacent to the club rooms, which can be opened up and used as reception and administration during competitions and matches.
